Choose Your Weapon
This seems rather obvious, but you should pick an electric razor that will work for you. Luckily this site’s main reason for being is just that, so please go and check out these reviews of various electric shavers. If you need some more help I also have a buyer’s guide that you can read here.
Prepare Your Face
This one I know I neglect all the time. Before you even start up that electric razor you need to cleanse your skin. While using some shower gel in the shower may work, it’s recommended that you wash your face with a cleansing soap first.
This protects your skin against some of the irritation that the shaving process will inevitably cause. Be sure to get a cleanser that matches your skin type. If you have dry skin, oily skin, or some mix of the above, using the right product will give you the best results.
Get Lubed Up
While electric shavers are probably best known for the ability to give you a dry shave, the best shaves are still those that use some sort of lubricant in order to make everything go smoothly. Literally.
Depending on the type of shaver you have there are basically two choices. You can use a standard old shaving cream, which can be great for your skin, given that your electric shaver was designed to work with shaving creams, foams, or gels. If you don’t want to do that or your shaver won’t survive it, you can use a specialized pre-electric lotion, powder, or gel. I review a few of these here. Either way, using any of these products will result in a much more pleasant shaving experience.
All In The Wrist
Everyone has their own unique way of shaving that works for them, but there are some general rules that are worth considering for everyone. The most important rule is not to go at it too fast. Taking the electric shave slowly allows the guide and oscillating or rotating blades to do their thing.
It also seems that shaving against the grain is a good idea in the case of electric shavers. This helps lift the hair up and feed it into the blades even more.
Wax On, Wax Off
Before you apply the aftershave, but after you finish the shave (complicated, I know) you need to wipe your face down with a cotton pad or skin-cleansing wipe. Think of this as priming your skin for the good stuff that’s still to come.
The After Party
There are many products that qualify as “aftershave” substances and you can read all about them in my aftershave buyer’s guide. If you don’t feel like doing the heavy lifting, you can have a look at my reviews of some of the most popular aftershaves here.
A good aftershave can really round off the whole shaving experience. If you match it to your skin type correctly, it will repair some of the minor damage shaving does to the skin and protect and nourish your neck flaps for the rest of the day. Never underestimate the value of a good aftershave, and if you find one that works, prepare to become a hoarder of precious aftershave. Like the guys who still keep bottles of the original recipe Old Spice.
Because You’re Worth It
I know that making this much fuss about our appearances may come off as being a little, shall we say, ladylike. Lots of masculine cultural traditions are adverse to this level of grooming, but the truth is that not only is giving yourself the full treatment good for your health, it will also make you feel better, and therefore can have a positive impact on many aspects of your life. Feeling fresh means being ready for new challenges and so on and so forth. Look, no one is going to know that you went through all the steps and most likely you’ll be the envy of the guys around the water cooler.
